A Zapotec Women's Cooperative

Demonstration, showing and sale of Zapotec Rug Art
Wednesday, 5:00 - 9:00 pm

Fiesta Days Studio behind the Gallery

Sponsored by The Vacaville Soroptimists

The Zapotec women from Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, mexico are conserving their traditions and expressing their cultural values in their woven rugs. Teotitlan is an indigenous community known around the world for its weaving. Patterns, techniques, and the 'habit' of weaving have been passed down from generation to generation.

In 1996 the women formed their own cooperative, "Vida Nueva". They support each other in their daily struggles and challenges, share ideas and techniques to improve their work, and sell their art directly to customers.

They are very proud of their rich history and traditions. The rugs are entirely handmade of 100% wool and dyed with natural dyes.
